1934 alvis crested eagle charlesworth six light manual saloon
Seller's Description
1934 Alvis Crested Eagle Charlesworth Six Light Saloon The Crested Eagle model was introduced in May 1933 and continued in production until 1939, producing circa 652 chassis. It competed in the Luxury Class with the majority of the automobiles bodied as Owner-Driven Saloons or Limousines, but also included a smattering of Sporty models. Coachbuilders, Charlesworth Bodies Ltd and Mayfair Carriage Company dominated this model Alvis. Of the 650 or so Crested Eagles produced over 7 years, research indicates that fifty-one have survived: forty-two as complete automobiles, four as Specials, and the remaining others as just chassis or a collection of parts. ABOUT THIS CAR This is a Charlesworth saloon and we understand from research that there are 23 Charlesworth Saloons remaining: 13 in UK, 2 in New Zealand, and 1 each in Australia, USA. This is one of the two in New Zealand. A succession of loving owners has maintained this remarkable and historic motor car. NZ New - fourteen owners in total since new. Full ownership records available. Imported into Wellington, July 1934 by JR Hancock & Edward Riddiford, this is the only operating Crested Eagle in NZ (one other under restoration) Manufacturers Register shows 652 built, most were cannibalised during 1960/70s for spares for the more desirable Speed 20 model. Alvis were strong in engineering and advanced designs in engines, gearboxes, transmissions, chassis – coachwork was done by others. They were known for initial focus on track cars and hill climbs, moving to fast sporting saloons in 1930s. Alvis diversified into aero engines (Leonides) and military vehicles during the war. This is a car of exceptional refinement and luxury. A well engineered, fast, comfortable sports saloon. New engine, with greater flexibility and reliability. Independent suspension, 4 speed pre-selector gearbox. Triple carburetor and dual coil/magneto ignition, Aluminum body, wooden frame, steel guards. Central lubrication system, built in jack. Still with its original engine (number 16571), the 2511cc in-line six cylinder transfers its power very gracefully to the road via the ENV pre-selector transmission. Independent front suspension means that road-holding is remarkably agile and responsive. This extremely rare 1934 Alvis was also used in a film at Keri Keri, New Zealand, involving Stratford Johns, better known as Inspector Barlow of the ``Softly Softly``television series. Price New was GBP750.00 Comes with Original Certificate Of Registration Top speed 72 MPH 21535 Alvis cars were built, of which over 200 came to New Zealand. Seventy are in regular use...of these some 20 are pre-war cars. The Alvis Car Club Of New Zealand was formed in 1969, and currently has over 100 members. Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd was a British manufacturing company in Coventry from 1919 to 1967. Alvis cars are elegant and were full of innovation. They are well built - in fact solidly built...a tradition of British excellence! The old Alvis cars weren’t just beautiful to look at, they were groundbreaking. From being one of the first car makers to introduce front-wheel drive and independent front suspension in the 1920s, to the creation of the sensational Speed 20 in the following decade, Alvis constantly pushed the boundaries of technological possibility. In the late 1920s, Alvis cars began making their mark on the racetrack, showcasing raw performance and durability. The racing prowess continued into the 1930s with Alvis competing internationally at the highest level. In the 1932 Le Mans event, an Alvis Speed 20, known for its quality engineering and aerodynamic design, showcased the brand’s prowess by achieving notable positions but it was the cars that were the real stars. In the annals of automotive history, Alvis cars stand as a beacon of British ingenuity and craftsmanship. From its pioneering innovations to the sheer elegance of its designs, the company’s legacy is emblematic of an era where performance met luxury. Though the marque ceased car production in the 1960s, its indelible mark on the motoring landscape ensures that Alvis remains an enduring symbol of British excellence.
